THE Bulls are a different side to the one beaten by the Sharks in their Super Rugby season-opener in February, says coach Frans Ludeke.

On Wednesday, he named the side that will be out to avenge their 31-16 defeat as the Bulls and Sharks square off on Saturday at Loftus. Ludeke made only two changes to the side that secured a 38-22 win over the Blues in March.

Dewald Potgieter makes a return to Loftus on a short-term loan from his Japanese club, Yamaha Jubilo. The experienced loose forward gets a starting berth at No 8, replacing Jono Ross who drops to the bench.

Following the death of his father last week, winger and vice-captain Akona Ndungane will be allowed some time away from the field and his place will be taken by Springbok Sevens player Sampie Mastriet.

Potgieter’s presence not only adds experience to the loose trio, it boosts a bulky forwards pack and sets up a bruising battle.

“It doesn’t matter — you can have all the experience — it comes down to what happens at the weekend. We need to put pressure on them to force turnovers. It will be a huge battle — (at) the set pieces and breakdowns. We will need to be on top of our game,” Ludeke said.

The coach was gleeful about Potgieter’s return and showered Ross with praise for his growth in Super Rugby. “Jono will be on the bench in a different capacity as he covers all three (loose forward) positions. He has been a quality player for us and has been impressive,” he said.

“We know the quality of Dewald. He fitted in nicely this whole week at training, and he is used to Super Rugby … He brings his work rate — he can play for 80 minutes, creating big moments in the game. He’ll be crucial with ball in hand, at the breakdown, defensive-wise and he makes sure we win the gainline.”

Ludeke stressed the improvements in the side since their defeat by the Sharks, and he expects his charges to carry the momentum from wins in their last two matches into this weekend’s clash. “There is a huge difference between our first game where most of our guys were coming back from operations (injury). Our combinations have settled down and everyone is now comfortable and understands their role,” the coach said.

The last time Ludeke’s counterpart, Sharks coach Jake White, visited Loftus he left the happier of the two after sending his former team, the Brumbies, through to the final of last season’s Super 15.

Ludeke downplayed ideas of avenging the semifinal defeat and getting even with the former World Cup winning Springbok coach.

“They (Sharks) are playing well. Jake is doing well, and it’s going to be a great battle at the weekend,” he said. “But it is never about individual battles — it’s about the team … It will boil down to which team executes their plan best.”

Sydney: The Coastal Sharks put their unbeaten Super 15 run on the line in this weekend`s South African derby with the Northern Bulls, as defending champions Waikato Chiefs trek to in-form Western Force.

The Sharks, under former World Cup-winning coach Jake White, have opened their season with four wins, but face a test against the Bulls in Pretoria, where they last won three years ago.

The Durban-based Sharks are comfortable eight-point leaders of the South African conference, but Saturday`s encounter will give a strong indication of their title credentials this season.

“Like Jake said when he took over the job, he`s here to win the competition,” veteran Springbok winger JP Pietersen said.

“He sent that message to all the boys and we`re all believing that. We`ve said every year in the past that we are going to win it, we`ve come close but never won it.

“The belief is the difference. It`s probably 100 percent better than what it`s ever been.”

Bulls coach Frans Ludeke has named Sampie Mastriet on the wing and Dewald Potgieteras at number eight to play the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld.

“Our first two away outings were pretty disappointing and everyone stepped up after that,” Bulls captain Flip van der Merwe said.

“The Sharks are not topping the log for nothing, but we have prepared well for this one. We will be ready.”

Two-time champions Waikato Chiefs have used 30 players in just three matches this season, and again will be injury-hit for when they face the Force.Charlie Ngatai and Robbie Fruean were the Chiefs` preferred midfield pairing in wins over the Crusaders and Highlanders, but both will sit out the trip to Perth.

The Chiefs, who lead the New Zealand conference by five points from the Crusaders, will meet a Force side full of confidence after back-to-back wins over the Melbourne Rebels and Otago Highlanders.

Waikato lost their first game in Perth in 2008, but have won on their last two visits, and the Force are eyeing a big scalp this weekend.

“We`re in a great position,” former Bulls lock Wilhelm Steenkamp said.

“The past two weeks have shown the quality of players the Force have. We want to make it a great season for us and we are busy getting something special here at the moment.”

The Queensland Reds have to adjust to Johannesburg`s high altitude for their challenging game against the Golden Lions on Saturday.

The Lions have won three of their five matches this season, and defeated the Auckland Blues last weekend, while the Reds fell to the Sharks in Durban.

“The 2014 Lions side is unrecognisable to the side from 2012,” Reds coach Richard Graham said.

“They`ve got a young group that don`t bear the scars of their previous history.”

The Reds trail the ACT Brumbies by four points in the Australian conference, with the Brumbies hosting South Africa`s Western Stormers in Canberra on Saturday.

The Brumbies took over at the top of the conference after downing the New South Wales Waratahs at home last weekend, but they have had trouble with the Cape Town-based team in the past.

The Stormers, who have lost to the Crusaders and Chiefs on their Australasian tour, downed the Brumbies 16-3 on their last trip to Canberra three years ago.

In this weekend`s remaining games, the Waratahs host the Rebels, the Highlanders are at home to the Wellington Hurricanes and the Blues face South Africa`s Central Cheetahs in Auckland.

The Lions and Reds meet in Round 6 of the Super Rugby season at Ellis Park on Sunday morning at 1:00am (AEDT)

What: Round 6 Super Rugby – Lions v Reds.
When: Sunday, March 23 – 1:00am (AEDT)
Where: Ellis Park.
I can view it on: Fox Sports

What did they do last week? The Lions snapped a two-game losing streak with a 39-36 win over the Blues in Johannesburg. The Reds went down 35-20 to the Sharks in Durban

Things you need to know: The Lions have won three-of-five games after returning from the relegation wilderness to sit second in the South African conference and fourth overall. They are all massive units and haven’t been afraid to chance their arm this season. Time will tell but they might not be the easy beats they have traditionally been this time around. The Reds have lost boom centre Chris Feauai-Sautia to a hamstring strain while prop Ben Daley will be out for six weeks with a knee injury. Richard Graham’s men have registered two wins and two losses in a mixed start to the season to sit fourth in the Australian Conference and ninth overall.

Reason to watch: Any game that Quade Cooper plays in is worth watching because he’s equally capable of producing both the sublime and ridiculous at any moment.

Reason to turn away: The Reds could be tired after playing in humid conditions in Durban and the Lions can play ugly on their day.

Say what: “I see them as a less experienced model of the Cheetahs. They don’t carry any of the scars from their relegation. They’re unrecognisable from that 2012 side. They’ll innovate and try things and that makes them a challenge mentally,” – Reds coach Richard Graham on the Lions

Final instructions: The Reds have won their last three games against the Lions including their previous two visits to Ellis Park. The biggest question here is whether the Reds have enough petrol left in the tank after a draining clash in humid conditions in Durban last week. The hosts have been much-improved so far this season and will take some beating but we’ll stick with the Reds to return to the winners’ circle. Reds by five.

Force v Chiefs — NIB Stadium 22 March 2014 7.00 pm (Local time) 10.00 pm (AEDT)

The Force will not be fazed by the arrival of the Super Rugby champions. The Chiefs are in cracking form but the men from the west have been giant-killers before and will run onto “Force Field” with the form of first-ever consecutive bonus-point wins behind them.

The first win was earned in a magic half hour at the start of their Round 4 game against the Rebels and the second was from a gutsy finish against the Highlanders in Round 5—holding onto a lead with only 13 men on the park for the last eight minutes.

There were signs of an improvement in form in the second half against the Brumbies in Round 3, their second game of the season, but few outside the team expected the turnaround that happened.

The Chiefs are one of only two unbeaten teams in the competition and they had their best win of their three against the Stormers last week. They improved their attacking potency with just-in-time offloads to get the ball wide and breach the vaunted defence of the South Africans with five tries.

The Force will regret the banning of no. 8 Ben McCalman because he is in the form of his life. It will be a heavy blow for the impressive Force backrow because he is the only true line-bender in the group.

Matt Hodgson also has hardly ever played better than he is doing now and Angus Cottrell is looking like a Hodgson clone.

The second row is performing also. Sam Wykes will not dominate physically but he is playing excited like a second Honey Badger in his scrapping tight work, and South African import Wilhelm Steenkamp has been influential when the Force maul—an attribute from his days with three South African rugby franchises.

And the lineout is working a treat with Charles throwing and Cottrell and Wykes catching.

The Chiefs ran around the big, slow Stormers last week with a high-tempo game, and it won’t be much different against the Force. The locals will have to realign their defence quickly if the Chiefs turn over Force ball, and they will have to push the envelope and slow the Chiefs down at the breakdown.

The visitors have been rocked by the ailments of key players but their impressive depth should serve them well.

Centres Charlie Ngatai (calf) and Robbie Freuen (arrhythmia), plus exciting new winger James Lowe (medial ligament), will all be absent for over a month and will miss the tour to Perth and the RSA.

Asaeli Tikoirotuma will probably come off the bench for Lowe, who displaced him last week, and was brilliant against the Stormers until his injury. Winger Tim Kerr-Barlow is candidate for the 13 jersey as is Mils Muliaina, who played centre regularly back in the day, and was rested last week. The versatile Andrew Horrell, who has been managed because of a groin strain, is another player available to start.

They have other tourists returning from injury also: prop Ben Afeaki, openside flanker Sam Cane and scrummie Gus Pulu. They could be in the matchday team.

Live streaming, Brumbies vs Stormers Super rugby online 2014 Live HD TV

The Brumbies and Stormers clash in Round 6 of the Super Rugby season at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night.

What: Round 6 Super Rugby – Brumbies v Stormers
When: Saturday, March 22 – 7:40pm (AEDT)
Where: Canberra Stadium.
I can view it on: Fox Sports

What did they do last week? The Brumbies reinforced their status as the best team in the Australian Conference with a 28-23 win over arch rivals the Waratahs. The Stormers suffered a 36-20 loss at the hands of defending champs the Chiefs in Hamilton.

Things you need to know: The Brumbies are flying after three straight wins but their early-season injury toll is becoming a concern. Tevita Kuridrani is the latest withdrawal after returning to Fiji to attend a funeral. David Pocock (knee), Fotu Auelua (knee), Rathbone (hamstring), Scott Sio (ankle), Henry Speight (jaw), Leon Power (knee) and Christian Lealiifano (ankle) are all sidelined through injury. Despite their injury woes, Stephen Larkham’s men lead the Australian Conference and sit third overall.
Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has made five changes after starting their Australasian tour with consecutive losses to the Chiefs and Crusaders. Veteran Peter Grant has been given a reprieve at flyhalf while elusive Springbok Juan de Jongh returns from injury via the bench. The Stormers have managed just one win from four games so far to sit third in the South African conference and 14th overall.

Reason to watch: Jesse Mogg. The Brumbies full-back was in electrifying form against the Waratahs and appears full of early-season confidence after making his Wallabies debut last season.

Reason to turn away: The Stormers will more than likely try to bash their way to victory with a boring game plan that involves a heap of kicking and a lot of fat blokes hitting the ball up from first receiver.

Say what: “This is going to be a physically confronting game. Those guys are massive boys in the forwards and they’ve got some big backs as well. We’re looking for a very physical game,” – Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham.

Final instructions: The Stormers have won the past two meetings between these two including a 16-3 victory in Canberra on their most recent visit in 2011. That was the Stormers’ only triumph in seven trips to the national capital. But a lot has changed for the Brumbies in three years and they are a far more formidable opponent in 2014. Last week’s win over the Waratahs was a major statement while the Stormers were no match for the Chiefs to continue a miserable start to the season. The visitors will be desperate but the injury-hit Brumbies should have enough class left on the park to continue their winning streak. Brumbies by eight.

Needing a win at home, the Blues welcome back key performers in Ma’a Nonu and Jerome Kaino for their game against the Cheetahs at Eden Park on Saturday.

LAST TIME: Blues 13 lost to Cheetahs 34, July 6, 2013, at Bloemfontein

WALKING WOUNDED: Rayno Benjamin has been moved to second five-eighths from the wing after Francois Venter flew home after suffering a shoulder injury. Raymond Rhule wasn’t considered due to an ankle injury and his place on the wing is taken by regular fullback Hennie Daniller. Jean Cook will play on the flank ahead of Lappies Labuschagne.

FORM: It could be a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time for the Cheetahs at Eden Park on Saturday. With only one win under their belt, their South African duties behind them, and a frustrating try call against them in Johannesburg the Blues have every reason to expect to make hay in this encounter. However, they do have work to do, especially in negotiating their start and they will need discipline and tight defence because while the Cheetahs were hammered by the Hurricanes last week, they have some deadly attacking options well capable of punishing the Blues. They too have everthing to play for having had only one win so far.

WE THINK: The Ma’a Nonu-Jerome Kaino factor will be a boost for the Blues, although both will be coming off the bench, but they are handy back-up men if the regulars don’t start the team on the road to victory. The Cheetahs may have an air of desperation about them and they may chance their arms even more than usually. But the need for an uplifting performance at home to get points on the board will be the over-arching emotion that should see the Blues get five points from this encounter.
